Rehoboth Tax Lists (1754-1822)

This is a collection of original tax lists. They were partially published in “Rehoboth Early Records,” Volume 4, pp 87-112. The backstory is that Elsie Carpenter gave these tax lists to Bowen on “20 April 1946 at 2:30 PM.” Bowen had intended to have the lists bound and returned to the Town Clerk as he wrote in a  footnote of Early Rehoboth Volume 4, but this footnote was ultimately eliminated from the final copy.

A summary of the papers appears in Early Rehoboth:

[These papers] have more than one hundred and ten original Rehoboth tax lists from 1754 to 1822, together with many duplicates. In all this mass of papers that there were only complete returns for 1759, 1762, 1765, 1766, 1768 and 1769. The years 1760, 1762, 1763, and 1764 each have one district missing; 1758 have two districts missing; 1754 has three districts missing; and 1755 has four districts missing. The year 1781 has three districts missing.

There is also an inhabitants list summary but I did not find these documents in the box.

An example of one of the lists is here (note that paper is longer than standard 11.5 inch scan) and The tax list summary shows the summary of the lists. Bowen chose to publish the first (1759) the middle (1765) and last (1769) of the six that covered the entire town. There are 33 artifacts that are in protective plastic sleeves.

Disposition: These should be donated to an organization that is willing to digitize them and make them available to the public.
